Short description: The course introduces student to field crop production. Its program contains: the concept of agroecosystem with its ecological levels, trophic structure and biodiversity, environmental factors affecting the crop, soil tillage technology, seeds and seeding, basics of crop rotations.
Full description: Program of the course contains: main features of field crop production, farm as agroecosystem, ecological levels and trophic structure of agroecosystem, basic differences between eco- and agroecosystem, environmental factors affecting the crop, theoretical bases of soil tillage, conventional soil tillage, reduced soil tillage, and zero tillage, preparation of seeds for seeding and seeding technology, assessment of seed material, assessment of plants in various stages of plant growth, mechanical cultivation of plant stand, harvest technologies of popular crops, principles of crop rotations, biodiversity of agroecosystems in contemporary agriculture
Bibliography: PDFs of scientific articles delivered by lecturer Gliessman S.R. 2000. Agroecology. Ecological processes in sustainable agriculture. Lewis Publishers, Boca Raton. Vandermeer J.H. 2011. Learning outcomes: Student receives basic knowledge on: the functioning of the agroecosystem, influence of environmental factors on crop, seeding technology, cultivation of plant stand and harvest technology of field crops Describes different soil tillage systems in crop rotation. Explains the effect of crop production on soil environment, weeds and crop Recognizes and describes crops, evaluates environmental conditions and selects appropriate crop species to the conditions Uses proper implements for soil tillage; designs soil tillage technology, methods of seeding and harvesting of the crop in planned crop rotation Organizes and conducts research in a team of persons Organizes and recommends soil tillage that does not degrade soil environment
